ODINAFRICA Marine Information Centre in Mauritius
The Albion Fisheries Research Centre
The Albion Fisheries Research Centre (Ministry of Fisheries)
represents the Marine Information Centre in Mauritius in association
with the ODINAFRICA Project.
The primary function of a Marine Information
Centre is to provide a bibliographical search and delivery service
for marine information to users in the marine field. The Centre
will work in collaboration with the coastal African states participating
in the information network set up under the ODINAFRICA Project.
The main objectives of the Centre are to
provide marine scientists in the region with the necessary
scientific information;
enhance the use of indigenous scientific information in the
region;
promote and facilitate communication between the scientists,
both intra- and inter-regionally;
disseminate information on marine scientific research activities
in the region.
To achieve these goals the project set out to develop a number of
services and products such as:
1. Provision of bibliographic search and document delivery services;
2. Provision of equipment and software to marine science libraries
in WIO region;
3. Development of the regional directory of marine scientists (WIODIR);
4. Development of a regional library holdings database (WIOLIB);
5. Publication the regional newsletter WINDOW (Western Indian Ocean
Waters);
6. Development of MASDEA (marine species database);
7. Co-operation in ASFA as regional input centre;
8. Publication of WIOBASE (integrated data and information sources
CD-ROM product).
