The
correct identification and naming of living organisms
is the basis of research in the field of diversity of
living organisms and their management. Overexploitation
and climate change are causing considerable changes in
the diversity of organisms. We are assembling, formatting,
analysing published marine biological data, including
descriptions, status and environmental data which we will
disseminate to a larger number of users. Our aim is to
develop a taxon-based biogeography database and an online
data server. It will store literature based on taxonomic,
and geographical data for species reported from Mauritian
Waters. The Database will become a fully functional biological
information system which can be updated whenever more
data are available. Maps or notes on geographical distribution
will be provided in cases where such information is available.
The electronic database of Marine Organisms in Mauritian
Waters will be linked to existing databases of marine
organisms such as Marine Species Database for Eastern
Africa (MASDEA), Ocean Biogeographic Information System
(OBIS), CephBase and FishBase. The Database will use the
World Wide Wed for access and networking, thus making
it available to a wide range of end-users. It will be
new in its geographical coverage, and in the number and
range of taxa that are being considered. This Database
of marine organisms will be a standard reference research,
management and training in the field of marine species
diversity in Mauritian waters. |
