ODINAFRICA II

Ocean Data and Information Exchange for Africa-Phase II (ODINAFRICA-II).

ODINAFRICA-II officially commenced on 1st September 2000 and will end on 31 August 2004.

The ODINAFRICA-II was initiated following the successful implementation of the First Phase. It is recalled that ODINAFRICA-I focussed on information management in the Western Indian Ocean. One of the main achievement within the framework of this programme was the establishment of the Regional Co-operation in Scientific Information Exchange in the Western Indian Ocean (RECOSCIX-WIO) Project. Other important outputs include.

Internet connectivity for marine scientists in the IOC/UNESCO Regional Committee for the Cooperative Investigation in the North and Central Western Indian Ocean (IOCINCWIO region).

Indigeneous scientific publications in FAO-IOC-UN AFSA through the regional ASFA input Centre (Mombasa, Kenya)

Trained manpower in marine information centres.

The Albion Fisheries Research Centre of the Ministry of Fisheries, is the focal point for RECOSCIX-WIO in Mauritius.

The ODINAFRICA-II project is being implemented with financial assistance from the Government of Flanders (Belgium) and IOC of UNESCO. The main objectives of the project are:-

  • Providing assistance in development of National Oceanographic Data Centres (NODCs) and establishing their networking in Africa.
