Albion Fisheries Research
Centre (Ministry of Fisheries)
The Albion Fisheries Research Centre carries out research,
development and management functions of the Ministry of Fisheries.
It covers a total surface area of 3,410m2 .
It has two other substations, La Ferme
Fish Farm and the Fishing Port. La Ferme Fish Farm has a total
pond rearing area of 4 ha for fresh water aquaculture development.
The Fishing Port which is situated in Port-Louis, provides
facilities for vessel-based fishery development activities.
Objectives
The basic objectives of the Albion Fisheries
Research Centre are:
· To carry out research, monitoring
surveys and studies needed for the sustainable development
and management of marine living resources (fish stocks, coral
reef etc.,)
· To provide support services
to stakeholders of the fishing industry, including those involved
in aquaculture development;
· To provide advice to policy
makers on matters related to the management and development
of marine resources and conservation of marine environment,
including the creation of marine parks and reserve in accordance
with the provisions of the Fisheries and Marine Resources
Act and the Environment Protection Act; and
· To act as a focal point for
the collaborative research and management as regard regional
and international fisheries and marine resources.

Marine Staff
The Centre has a staff strength of some
67 officers in the scientific and technical grade together
with a support staff of some 97 persons (technical support:
19, administration: 18, and minor grade 60) and four overseas
consultants.
